These results led to the development of BlueSeal Original, which has been widely adopted in the food and pharmaceutical industries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We later created BlueSeal Compact &#8211; a streamlined model designed for minimal obstruction in smaller cargo areas. Before launching, we wanted to test whether air curtains for energy-efficient refrigerated vans could deliver the same advantages as in larger vehicles, maintaining maximum efficiency while reducing energy loss.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Why Smaller Vehicles Need Air Curtains for Energy-Efficient Refrigerated Vans<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Temperature-controlled vans face the same challenges as larger refrigerated trucks: significant cold loss occurs when cargo doors are opened. Without an effective climate barrier, cooling units must work harder, using more energy and fuel.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; angled_section=&#8221;no&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; background_image_as_pattern=&#8221;without_pattern&#8221;][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>Testing the Design in a Refrigerated Van<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We tested BlueSeal in a Mercedes Vito van (internal cargo space approx. 4.8 m\u00b3) at outside temperatures of 16-17 \u00b0C. The van\u2019s temperature was regulated by a diesel cooling system (also electrically powered when needed).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ten sensors were placed throughout the cargo space, recording temperatures every 5 seconds over a 6-hour period.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Day 1 &#8211; Single 1-minute door opening, with and without BlueSeal<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Days 2 &amp; 3 &#8211; Repeated door openings, comparing no barrier, PVC strips, and BlueSeal<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Figure 1 shows the cargo space layout; Figure 2 details the sensor locations.)<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; angled_section=&#8221;no&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; background_image_as_pattern=&#8221;without_pattern&#8221;][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1390&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221; qode_css_animation=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;15px&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<em>Fig 1. Without any barrier, temperatures near the ceiling rose 17 \u00b0C within one minute. With air curtains for energy-efficient refrigerated vans, this increase was limited to 7.5 \u00b0C.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Figure 2 shows, temperatures rose significantly less across almost all sensors when using BlueSeal, except at floor-level near the cargo door &#8211; likely due to the air curtain\u2019s downward turbulence.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; angled_section=&#8221;no&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; background_image_as_pattern=&#8221;without_pattern&#8221;][vc_column][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1386&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221; qode_css_animation=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; angled_section=&#8221;no&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; background_image_as_pattern=&#8221;without_pattern&#8221; z_index=&#8221;&#8221; padding_top=&#8221;30px&#8221;][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>Test 2 &#8211; Repeated Door Openings<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over four consecutive 1-minute door openings:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No barrier &#8211; Temperatures at 75 cm and 95 cm height in the centre rose 15-18 \u00b0C (Figure 3a)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With BlueSeal &#8211; Only 7-8 \u00b0C increase<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without a barrier, temperatures near the floor rose less, likely because the ceiling, walls, and floor helped cool incoming air. However, cooling units had to work much harder to restore temperatures, increasing energy use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With air curtains for energy-efficient refrigerated vans, energy use was reduced and cargo temperatures stayed more stable, even after multiple openings.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; angled_section=&#8221;no&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; background_image_as_pattern=&#8221;without_pattern&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1394&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221; qode_css_animation=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; angled_section=&#8221;no&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; background_image_as_pattern=&#8221;without_pattern&#8221; z_index=&#8221;&#8221; padding_top=&#8221;30px&#8221;][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>Test 3 &#8211; BlueSeal vs PVC Curtains<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We compared BlueSeal with PVC strips, the traditional climate barrier. During 3-minute door openings:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PVC strips &#8211; Air temperatures rose 20-22 \u00b0C near the ceiling and cargo centre<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BlueSeal &#8211; Rise limited to 17 \u00b0C<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PVC strips often allow upper-level warm air infiltration, while BlueSeal maintained more consistent ceiling-to-floor temperatures thanks to its controlled circulation pattern.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; angled_section=&#8221;no&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; background_image_as_pattern=&#8221;without_pattern&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1402&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221; qode_css_animation=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; angled_section=&#8221;no&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; background_image_as_pattern=&#8221;without_pattern&#8221; z_index=&#8221;&#8221; padding_top=&#8221;30px&#8221;][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusions: The Case for Air Curtains in Energy-Efficient Refrigerated Vans<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BlueSeal performed excellently as a climate control method in small cargo spaces. Whether in single or repeated door opening scenarios, BlueSeal significantly slowed temperature rise and reduced the cooling unit\u2019s workload.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compared with PVC curtains, air curtains for energy-efficient refrigerated vans provided better temperature stability, improved hygiene (no physical barrier to push aside), and reduced energy costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These 2013 tests laid the foundation for BlueSeal\u2019s development into a fully commercial product, now used globally by operators seeking better cold chain management.
